Dexamethasone Trimethyl Acetate Injection

Dexamethasone Trimethyl Acetate is a long-acting corticosteroid used for inducing parturition in cattle, causing calving to occur between 4 and 26 days after administration. Also used as an anti-inflammatory agent for various rheumatic, allergic, and skin conditions in different animal species. An FAO/WHO Veterinary Medicine.

Dexamethasone Trimethyl Acetate is a synthetic glucocorticoid used for its potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties.

INDICATIONS

  • Inflammatory Conditions: Managing inflammation associated with a range of diseases, including arthritis and other rheumatic conditions, myositis, tendonitis, bursitis, and sprains.
  • Allergic Reactions: Treating severe allergic conditions such as asthma, hives (urticaria), itching (pruritus), and anaphylactic reactions in emergency situations.
  • Autoimmune Diseases: Suppressing an overactive immune system in conditions such as immune-mediated hemolytic anemia or thrombocytopenia, and systemic lupus.
  • Bovine Ketosis: It is indicated for the treatment of primary bovine ketosis due to its potent gluconeogenic effects, which rapidly raise blood sugar levels.
  • Supportive Therapy: Used as supportive therapy (alongside primary treatments like antibiotics) in cases of mastitis, metritis, traumatic gastritis, pyelonephritis, pneumonia, and retained placenta to combat stress and enhance general well-being.
  • Central Nervous System Disorders: Relieving swelling associated with spinal cord trauma or brain tumors.
  • Certain Cancers: Used as part of a chemotherapy protocol to manage symptoms and reduce inflammation associated with certain cancers like leukemia and lymphoma.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Intramuscular (IM) Injection: The medication is injected into a large muscle mass, such as the thigh or the muscles along the spine. The effects of intramuscular administration of some dexamethasone formulations (like sodium phosphate) are generally noted within 6 to 12 hours.
  • Intravenous (IV) Injection: The medication is injected directly into a vein. This route is typically used when an immediate hormonal response or supportive therapy for shock is required, as the effects are noted sooner than with IM injection.
  • Subcutaneous (SC) Injection: This route involves injecting the medication under the skin, often in the scruff area. It is sometimes used in palliative care as an alternative to the oral route.
  • Intra-articular or Soft Tissue Injection: The injection is made directly into an affected joint or surrounding soft tissue (e.g., for bursitis, tendonitis), which is typically done when only one or two areas are affected.
