Dinoprost Injection

Dinoprost is a synthetic analogue of prostaglandin used to control the timing of estrus and ovulation in estrous cattle with a corpus luteum, and for treatment of pyometra (chronic endometritis). Used to induce labor, and manage various reproductive conditions in cattle, swine, and horses.

Dinoprost is a luteolytic agent indicated for reproductive management in cattle, swine, and mares.

INDICATIONS

Cattle

  • Estrus synchronization (controlled breeding) in normally cycling cows and heifers, often in combination with other hormones like gonadorelin (FACTREL) or progesterone inserts (EAZI-BREED CIDR) as part of fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) protocols.
  • Treatment of unobserved estrus (silent heat) in lactating dairy cows that have a corpus luteum.
  • Treatment of chronic reproductive disorders like pyometra (chronic endometritis).
  • Induction of abortion during the first 100 days of gestation in beef cows, beef heifers, and replacement dairy heifers.
  • Induction of parturition (birthing), especially where there is a risk of oversized calves or other complications.
Swine (Gilts and Sows)
  • Parturition induction (farrowing) when injected within three days of the normal predicted farrowing date to control the time of farrowing.
Mares
  • Controlling the timing of estrus in cycling mares to schedule breeding.
  • Treatment of difficult-to-breed mares that are in extended diestrus (clinically anestrous but still have a corpus luteum).

ADMINISTRATION

  • Intramuscular (IM) Injection: This is the standard administration method for most dinoprost products (e.g., standard Lutalyse, ProstaMate) across various species including cattle, swine, and mares. The injection is given deep into a large muscle mass, often in the neck or rear leg area.
  • Subcutaneous (SC) Injection: The higher-concentration formula, Lutalyse HighCon, is FDA-approved for both IM and SC use in beef and dairy cattle. SC injections are typically given just under the skin, often in the neck region, using the “tent” technique to ensure proper placement. This method helps to minimize muscle damage and injection site lesions that can affect meat quality.
  • Aseptic Technique: Use sterile needles and syringes for each injection to minimize the risk of bacterial infections.
  • Needle Size: Select an appropriate needle size for the animal and injection type to ensure effective delivery and minimal discomfort.
  • Aspiration: Before injecting the medication, pull back slightly on the plunger. If blood appears, the needle is in a blood vessel and you need to choose a new injection site.
