Doxycycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections and certain parasitic conditions in animals.
INDICATIONS
- Tick-borne diseases: This includes conditions like Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
- Respiratory infections: It is used to treat conditions such as kennel cough (Bordetella bronchiseptica), pneumonia, and other upper respiratory tract infections caused by susceptible bacteria.
- Heartworm disease: It is used as an adjunctive treatment to kill Wolbachia, a type of bacteria that lives within heartworms, which helps reduce complications during heartworm treatment.
- Gum (periodontal) disease: The medication helps manage inflammation and fight bacteria associated with dental infections.
- Other infections: This includes urinary tract, skin, and blood-borne infections caused by susceptible bacteria.
ADMINISTRATION
- Oral Administration: Capsules are given by mouth.
- Give with Food/Water: It is crucial to give the capsule with a small amount of food or follow it with at least a teaspoon (5 mL) of water to help it reach the stomach. This is especially important for cats, as a dry pill can get stuck in the throat or esophagus and cause severe irritation or ulcers.
- Avoid Dairy/Supplements: Do not give the medication with milk, multivitamins, or calcium/iron supplements within 2 hours of the dose, as these can reduce the drug’s effectiveness.
