Enrofloxacin Tablets

Enrofloxacin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections in cattle and swine, especially those that are severe or have not responded to other antibiotics, including bovine respiratory disease, swine respiratory disease, salmonellosis and colibacillosis. Often used to treat skin and ear infections in dogs and cats, and respiratory infections in cows, pigs, sheep, horses, goats and poultry.

Enrofloxacin tablets are indicated for the management of diseases associated with bacteria susceptible to enrofloxacin in dogs and cats.

INDICATIONS

  • Dermal (Skin) Infections: This includes general skin infections, wounds, and abscesses associated with susceptible bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, and Staphylococcus species.
  • Respiratory Infections: These can include pneumonia, tonsillitis, and rhinitis caused by susceptible strains of bacteria like Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.
  • Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Enrofloxacin is effective for urinary cystitis (bladder infections) caused by susceptible bacteria, including Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, and Staphylococcus aureus.
Off-Label and Other Uses
  • Gastrointestinal infections.
  • Ear infections (otitis externa/media), particularly those involving difficult-to-treat bacteria like Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
  • Osteomyelitis (bone infections).
  • Peritonitis (inflammation of the abdominal lining).

ADMINISTRATION

  • Dosing Frequency: The tablets are typically given once or twice daily.
  • Food: Enrofloxacin is best absorbed on an empty stomach; however, if it causes nausea, vomiting, or appetite loss, it can be given with a small amount of food.
  • Do Not Crush Coated Tablets: Film-coated tablets should not be crushed because they have a bitter taste that can make administration difficult and cause the pet to reject the medication. Chewable forms are available and often flavored.
  • Do Not Give with Dairy/Antacids/Vitamins: Avoid giving enrofloxacin at the same time as products containing metal cations (e.g., aluminum, calcium, iron, magnesium), such as multivitamins, antacids, or dairy products (like cheese), as these can significantly reduce the antibiotic’s absorption and effectiveness. A two-hour window before or after these products is recommended.
  • Ensure Full Course is Completed: It is crucial to complete the entire course of treatment prescribed by the veterinarian, even if the pet appears to be better. Stopping antibiotics early can lead to a recurrence of the infection and contribute to antibiotic resistance.
  • Provide Water: Ensure the animal has constant access to fresh water to maintain hydration, which can help prevent crystal formation in the urine.
