Lactated Ringers Solution

Lactated Ringers is a sterile, balanced electrolyte solution used for hydration and electrolyte replenishment. Treats dehydration, metabolic acidosis, and corrects electrolyte imbalance in dogs, cats, horses, cattle, sheep, and swine.

Lactated Ringer’s Solution is used for hydration and electrolyte replenishment in dogs, cats, horses, cattle, sheep, and swine.

INDICATIONS

  • Treatment of Dehydration: LRS is commonly used to rehydrate animals suffering from fluid loss due to conditions like diarrhea, vomiting, or decreased fluid intake.
  • Correction of Electrolyte Disturbances: The solution helps replenish essential electrolytes (sodium, potassium, calcium, chloride, and lactate) to restore the body’s natural balance.
  • Correction of Metabolic Acidosis: The lactate ions in LRS are metabolized in the liver to bicarbonate, which helps produce a metabolic alkalinizing effect, counteracting acidic conditions in the body.
  • Fluid Therapy and Volume Resuscitation: LRS may be used to restore blood volume in cases of hypovolemic shock, or to support patients during surgery.
  • Supportive Care for Chronic Conditions: Subcutaneous LRS injections may be given for long-term management of chronic conditions, such as renal failure in dogs and cats, to maintain hydration at home.
  • Vehicle for Medications: LRS can serve as a diluent for intravenous medications, ensuring they are delivered effectively when compatibility allows.

ADMINISTRATION

  • In Drinking Water: This is a common method for administering the medication to poultry, pigs, calves, and lambs in group settings. The powder is water-soluble and designed to be easily dissolved in the animals’ water supply to ensure they receive a proper dosage.
  • Mixed with Feed: For livestock and pigs, the powder can also be thoroughly mixed with a specific amount of feed, using existing mixing technologies, for the duration of the treatment period.
  • Individual Dosing: For smaller animals like dogs and cats, or individual treatment of livestock, the appropriate dosage is often calculated based on body weight and given with water or potentially compounded into a liquid solution.
