Nobivac L4 Vaccine

MSD's Nobivac L4 is a vaccine used for the active immunization of healthy dogs against four specific strains of Leptospira bacteria. Administered as a subcutaneous injection, typically requiring two initial doses followed by annual boosters.

Leptospira pomona vaccine is indicated for preventing serious, sometimes fatal, kidney and liver disease (Leptospirosis) in dogs and horses.

INDICATIONS

    • Risk-Based Protection: For dogs exposed to environments with rodents, wildlife, or standing water (ponds, puddles), as L. pomona is a common circulating serovar.
    • Disease Prevention: Prevents severe illness affecting kidneys and liver, characterized by fever, lethargy, vomiting, jaundice, and acute renal/hepatic failure.
    • Recommended Serovars: Often combined in 4-way vaccines (with L. canicola, L. icterohaemorrhagiae, L. grippotyphosa) for broad protection, with annual boosters.

For Horses

  • Prevention: Vaccinates healthy horses (6 months+) against L. interrogans serovar pomona.
  • Clinical Signs: Protects against equine leptospirosis, which can cause uveitis (eye inflammation), abortion, placentitis, and kidney failure.
  • Schedule: Two doses for unvaccinated adults, followed by annual boosters, and also safe for foals/pregnant mares.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Dogs: The vaccine is typically given as a subcutaneous injection. It is often administered between the shoulder blades or in the loose skin over the shoulder.
  • Cattle: It can be administered either subcutaneously (usually in the upper neck region) or intramuscularly, depending on the specific product and Beef Quality Assurance guidelines.
  • Horses: For horses, the L. pomona vaccine is administered as a 1 mL intramuscular injection.
Protocol
  1. Initial Dose: A single dose is given to healthy animals.
  2. Booster Dose: A second dose is required 2 to 4 weeks (dogs) or 3 to 6 weeks (cattle and horses) after the first to establish immunity.
  3. Annual Revaccination: Annual boosters are recommended to maintain protection, as immunity to Leptospira bacterins typically does not last beyond 12 months.
