Boehringer’s Enterisol Ileitis vaccine is indicated for healthy pigs and sometimes foals for the prevention or control Porcine Proliferative Enteropathy (PPE).

INDICATIONS

For Pigs
  • Purpose: Active immunization against Lawsonia intracellularis (Ileitis/PPE).
  • Reduces: Diarrhea, decreased weight gain, intestinal lesions, bacterial shedding, and mortality.
  • Timing: Administer at least 3-4 weeks before expected infection; best results around 8 weeks prior to expected seroconversion.
  • Usage: Can often be mixed with PCV2 and M. hyopneumoniae vaccines for multi-disease protection.

For Horses

  • Purpose: Used off-label (intrarectally) to prevent Equine Proliferative Enteropathy (EPE) in foals.
  • Benefits: Vaccinated foals show reduced clinical signs (like thickened intestines), less severe disease, and lower shedding compared to unvaccinated foals.
  • Important Note: This is an off-label use; veterinarians must check state regulations.
Key Considerations
  • Medication-Free Period: Must avoid antibiotics and disinfectants for at least 7 days around vaccination (3 days before/after) to prevent inactivation.
  • Type of Vaccine: Live vaccines typically use oral routes, while inactivated vaccines often use IM injection.
  • Target Species: Mostly pigs, but research also explores equine use.
  • Timing: Vaccinate pigs from around 3 weeks of age.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Drinking Water (Live Vaccines):
    • Prepare by flushing water lines and ensuring no antimicrobials (e.g., for 3 days before/after).
    • Add thawed/rehydrated vaccine to clean, untreated water.
    • Pigs consume the water within 6 hours.
  • Oral Drench/Gel (Live Vaccines):
    • Administered directly into the mouth via syringe (drench) or special gel applicators.
    • This method is faster and efficient for large groups, even before weaning.
  • Intramuscular (IM) Injection (Inactivated Vaccines):
    • A 2 mL dose injected into the neck muscle.
    • Reconstituted with a special solvent or mixed with other vaccines.
Key Considerations
  • Target Species: Mostly pigs, but research also explores equine use.
  • Type of Vaccine: Live vaccines typically use oral routes, while inactivated vaccines often use IM injection.
  • Timing: Vaccinate pigs from around 3 weeks of age.
