Moraxella bovis vaccine is indicated for healthy cattle to help prevent or control pinkeye (infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK)), caused by M. bovis.
INDICATIONS
- Prevention of Pinkeye (IBK): The primary use is to protect cattle from the clinical signs of pinkeye, like corneal opacity, ulcers, tearing, and redness.
- Herds with History of Pinkeye: Recommended for herds experiencing recurrent pinkeye outbreaks.
- Age: For healthy cattle, typically starting from 2 months (8 weeks) or 3 months of age, with some vaccines targeting older calves (e.g., 14 weeks).
- Specific Strains: Vaccines often contain multiple M. bovis isolates to broaden protection, though effectiveness can vary with circulating strains.
ADMINISTRATION
- Dosage: A single 2 mL dose is administered per animal.
- Method: The vaccine is to be injected subcutaneously (under the skin).
- Timing: It should be given prior to the expected onset of the pinkeye season.
- Age: The vaccine is safe for use in cattle 2 months of age or older.
- Revaccination: A 2 mL booster dose is recommended annually before pinkeye season to maintain immunity.
- Adverse Reactions: Anaphylactoid (allergic) reactions may occur. Epinephrine is the antidote.
