Paromomycin Oral Solution

Paromomycin oral solution is used to treat intestinal parasitic infections, specifically diarrhea and shedding of oocysts caused by Cryptosporidium parvum in pre-ruminant calves, lambs, and piglets. Has shown efficacy in treating cryptosporidiosis across various animal species, including calves, lambs, and foals.

Paromomycin oral solution is indicated for the treatment of gastrointestinal infections caused by susceptible pathogens, particularly parasitic infections.

INDICATIONS

  • Cryptosporidiosis: In pre-ruminant calves, lambs, and goat kids, it is indicated for the reduction of the occurrence, severity, and duration of diarrhea.
  • Colibacillosis: In pigs, it is used for the treatment of gastrointestinal infections caused by Escherichia coli susceptible to paromomycin.
  • Amebiasis: Paromomycin is used to treat acute and chronic intestinal amebiasis (caused by Entamoeba histolytica) in various species, including dogs and cats. It is a luminal agent and is not effective against extraintestinal forms of the infection.
  • Giardiasis: It can be used as a treatment option for Giardia infections.
  • Other parasitic infections: Also used for tapeworm and liver fluke infections.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Mixing with liquids (for herd/flock treatment): For pre-ruminant cattle and pigs, the solution is often diluted into the animals’ drinking water, milk, or milk replacer. The concentration must be carefully calculated based on the animals’ body weight and daily water/milk consumption to ensure correct dosing. Medicated liquids should be prepared fresh daily (or every 6 hours for milk mixtures).
  • Direct oral administration (for individual treatment): When treating an individual animal (dog, cat, or a calf that hasn’t finished its medicated milk), the medication is administered directly into the mouth, using a dosing syringe or another appropriate oral device.
    • To do this effectively, the solution is typically inserted into the cheek pocket or the side of the mouth, then slowly expressed to allow the animal to swallow at its own pace.
    • Massaging the animal’s neck or stroking its chin can encourage swallowing.
