Ponazuril Oral Paste

Ponazuril is used in horses to treat Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM), a serious neurological disease caused by the parasite Sarcocystis neurona. It is administered orally using a pre-calibrated syringe.

Ponazuril oral paste is indicated for CNS and gastrointestinal infections caused by protozoal parasites in horses.

INDICATIONS

Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM): A neurological disease in horses caused by Sarcocystis neurona.

Off-Label:
  • Coccidiosis: Intestinal infections by Cystoisospora and Eimeria in dogs, cats, rabbits, and piglets, often causing diarrhea.

ADMINISTRATION

The medication (brand name Marquis) is formulated as a 15% w/w oral paste designed for easy and accurate dosing in horses.
  • Dosing: The paste is typically administered at a dose rate of 5 mg/kg of body weight once daily for at least 28 consecutive days, or until clinical signs resolve.
  • Method:
    1. The horse’s weight is determined, and the dosage ring on the syringe plunger is set to the correct weight marking.
    2. The tip of the syringe is introduced into the side of the horse’s mouth, in the space between the front and back teeth.
    3. The entire dose of paste is deposited onto the back and top of the horse’s tongue by depressing the plunger as far as the dose ring permits.
    4. The horse’s head is gently raised for a few seconds to encourage swallowing.
  • Loading Dose: An initial loading dose of 15 mg/kg may be recommended for the first dose only to help the medication reach effective levels in the bloodstream and cerebrospinal fluid faster.
