Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus Vaccine is used to vaccinate healthy pregnant sows and gilts to protect their newborn piglets from severe diarrhea and death.

INDICATIONS

  • Protecting Neonatal Piglets: The main objective is to protect highly susceptible suckling piglets from severe, often fatal, watery diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration caused by PEDV infection.
  • Inducing Lactogenic Immunity: Vaccination of the dam (mother) stimulates the production of specific antibodies (IgG and IgA) that are transferred to the piglets through the colostrum and milk, offering crucial passive enteric protection during their most vulnerable period.
  • Disease Prevention and Control in Herds: The vaccine is used as part of a comprehensive disease management plan, which also includes stringent biosecurity measures, to help reduce viral shedding, minimize the spread of the virus within a herd, and mitigate significant economic losses in the swine industry.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Intramuscular (IM) Injection: The most common field administration method.
    • Location: Typically injected into the neck muscle just behind the ear.
    • Dosage: Commercial inactivated vaccines often require a 2 mL dose.
    • Schedule: Often administered as a two-dose regimen (e.g., 5 weeks and 2 weeks before farrowing in pregnant sows).
  • Oral Administration: Used to stimulate mucosal immunity in the gut, which is vital for protecting suckling piglets via the sow’s milk.
    • Method: Administered via drench guns, feeding tubes, or sometimes through drinking water or specialized gels.
    • Live Vaccines: Live-attenuated vaccines (LAVs) are designed for oral use to induce a strong secretory IgA (sIgA) response.
