AUSKIPRA BK Vaccine

HIPRA's AUSKIPRA BK is an inactivated injectable vaccine used to prevent Pseudorabies-Aujeszky’s Virus Disease (AD) in swine. Allows for differentiation between vaccinated and naturally infected animals, enabling control and eradication by helping to identify and remove infected pigs.

Pseudorabies (Aujeszky’s Disease) virus (PRV) vaccine is indicated for the prevention and control of PRV in domestic pig populations.

INDICATIONS

  • Disease Control in Swine Herds: Used as both a preventive measure in at-risk areas and a control measure during an acute outbreak.
  • Age-Specific Clinical Signs: PRV causes different symptoms depending on the pig’s age. Vaccination helps protect against:
    • High Mortality and Neurological Signs in Piglets: Suckling piglets are highly vulnerable to fatal neurological disease.
    • Respiratory Illness in Grower-Finisher Pigs: Older pigs typically develop respiratory signs and pneumonia.
    • Reproductive Failure: In sows, the virus can cause embryonic death, abortions, stillbirths, and the birth of weak piglets.
  • Differentiation of Infected from Vaccinated Animals (DIVA Strategy): Modern “marker” vaccines are used in conjunction with specific diagnostic tests (gE ELISAs), which is crucial for monitoring and successful disease eradication programs.
  • Specific Animal Groups:
    • Breeding herds (sows and boars) are often vaccinated quarterly.
    • Piglets may receive intranasal immunization, especially during the first week of life.
    • New stock (gilts and boars) should be bought from disease-free farms and vaccinated upon arrival or during quarantine

ADMINISTRATION

  • Intramuscular (IM) injection: This is a common method where the vaccine is injected into a muscle.
  • Intranasal (IN) administration: This route can induce local immunity at the site of viral entry.
  • Subcutaneous (SC) injection: The vaccine is injected into the loose skin, for example, behind the shoulder.
  • Intradermal (ID) administration: This method involves injecting a small dose into the dermis, often using a needleless device. This method requires less animal constraint and can be verified by a small papule at the injection site.
