Azista Rifampin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat deep-seated, intracellular, or abscess-forming bacterial infections in horses and dogs.

INDICATIONS

  • In horses: The primary use is in combination with a macrolide antibiotic (e.g., erythromycin or clarithromycin) to treat Rhodococcus equi pneumonia and related abscesses.
  • In dogs: It is reserved for complicated and multidrug-resistant infections, such as:
    • Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus skin infections (pyoderma).
    • Canine leproid granuloma (a mycobacterial infection).
    • Occasionally, ehrlichiosis or brucellosis.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Combination Therapy: Rifampin is almost always used in combination with another antibiotic to prevent bacteria from rapidly developing resistance.
  • Empty Stomach: It is best absorbed on an empty stomach.
  • Feeding with Food (If needed): If gastrointestinal upset (vomiting, anorexia) occurs, it may be given with a small amount of food, though this can decrease the amount absorbed.
  • Formulation: As a liquid suspension, it should be shaken well before each use and measured carefully with a dosing syringe.
