Avoid Extravasation: Because the solution is highly hypertonic and alkaline, leakage into surrounding tissues can cause severe irritation, chemical cellulitis, and tissue damage. Central line administration is often preferred to help reduce this risk.
Incompatibility: Do not mix with solutions containing calcium, as this can cause a precipitate to form.
Monitoring: Frequent monitoring of blood pH, electrolyte levels, and CO2 content is necessary to prevent alkalosis or hypernatremia.
Contraindications: It should not be used in animals losing chloride through vomiting or those receiving specific diuretics that produce hypochloremic alkalosis.
