Sodium Bicarbonate Injection

NEOGEN Vet sodium bicarbonate injection is used to treat metabolic acidosis in cattle, horses, sheep, swine, and dogs. Acts as a systemic alkalizer to neutralize excess acid, raise blood pH, and restore the acid-base balance in the bloodstream. A WVA Veterinary Medicine.

NEOGEN Vet sodium bicarbonate injection is indicated for the treatment of metabolic acidosis in cattle, horses, sheep, swine, and dogs.

INDICATIONS

  • Severe renal disease (kidney failure).
  • Uncontrolled diabetes (diabetic ketoacidosis).
  • Circulatory insufficiency due to shock or severe dehydration.
  • Cardiac arrest.
  • Severe primary lactic acidosis.
  • Severe diarrhea that causes a significant loss of bicarbonate from the body.
  • Certain drug intoxications such as those caused by salicylates, or methyl alcohol, where alkalization of the urine is necessary.
  • Acute carbohydrate engorgement in ruminants, which leads to excessive acid production in the rumen.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Rapid Intravenous Infusion: In cattle and horses, a certain volume of the 8.4% solution may be given undiluted by rapid infusion.
  • Slow Intravenous Infusion: The solution is often added to other intravenous fluids and administered over a period of time.
  • Emergency Bolus: In critical emergencies such as cardiac arrest, a rapid administration may be given and repeated based on monitoring.
Precautions
  • Avoid Extravasation: Because the solution is highly hypertonic and alkaline, leakage into surrounding tissues can cause severe irritation, chemical cellulitis, and tissue damage. Central line administration is often preferred to help reduce this risk.
  • Incompatibility: Do not mix with solutions containing calcium, as this can cause a precipitate to form.
  • Monitoring: Frequent monitoring of blood pH, electrolyte levels, and CO2 content is necessary to prevent alkalosis or hypernatremia.
  • Contraindications: It should not be used in animals losing chloride through vomiting or those receiving specific diuretics that produce hypochloremic alkalosis.
