Suramin Sodium is a potent trypanocide indicated for the treatment of animal trypanosomiasis, which causes diseases like surra in animals. It functions by disrupting the parasite's ATP production. 

Suramin Sodium is a potent trypanocide indicated for the treatment of animal trypanosomiasis. Works by inhibiting energy metabolism and essential enzymes in parasites.

INDICATIONS

  • Surra (Trypanosoma evansi): Specifically indicated for camels, horses, and dogs. In camels, it is often administered as a single intravenous (IV) dose of 10 mg/kg.
  • Nagana (African Animal Trypanosomiasis): Used to treat infections caused by Trypanosoma brucei subspecies in domestic animals such as cattle. However, it is generally ineffective against T. vivax and T. congolense.
  • Dourine (Trypanosoma equiperdum): Historically used for this sexually transmitted infection in horses.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Route: Slow intravenous injection or slow intravenous infusion.
  • Preparation: The medication is typically supplied as a powder in a vial and must be dissolved in an appropriate solvent, such as water for injection or 0.9% NaCl solution, before administration.
  • Dosage: The specific dosage and frequency depend heavily on the animal species and the condition being treated.
  • Monitoring: Animals should be monitored for adverse effects, particularly renal function (e.g., proteinuria, hematuria).
