Tetanus Antitoxin

MSD Tetanus Antitoxin Behring is indicated for prophylactic use and therapeutic use (treatment) of tetanus in horses, sheep, and dogs

– Prophylactic use in horses, sheep and dogs to reduce the risk of tetanus infection, as a result of accidental injury or as a preoperative precaution.
– Therapeutic use in horses and dogs to enhance recovery rates in animals showing clinical signs of tetanus, when combined with other treatments.
– Prophylactic Use (Prevention)

- Subcutaneous (SC) or Intramuscular (IM): These are the standard routes for prophylactic (preventive) use. For example, a 1,500 IU dose is typically given this way following an injury or surgery.
- Intravenous (IV): Used primarily for the treatment of clinical tetanus to reach therapeutic levels quickly. In horses, it is preferably given as a slow bolus over 30 minutes.
- Intrathecal (Subarachnoid Space): In severe equine cases, veterinarians may inject TAT directly into the subarachnoid space (through the cisterna magna) to supply the central nervous system with antitoxin more effectively.
- Intraperitoneal: Occasionally used in some species for general administration.
