Nuflor Injection

MSD Nuflor (florfenicol) is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used in cattle and sheep to treat and control bacterial infections in livestock, particularly respiratory diseases, and foot rot. A WOAH Veterinary Medicine.

Florfenicol is indicated for the treatment and control of specific bacterial diseases in cattle and swine.

INDICATIONS

  • Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) in cattle, caused by Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, and Histophilus somni.
  • Ovine Respiratory Tract Infections in sheep, due to M. haemolytica and P. multocida susceptible to florfenicol.
  • Swine Respiratory Disease (SRD) in pigs, caused by Pasteurella multocida susceptible to florfenicol.
Important Considerations
  • Not for Breeding Animals: Not for use in adult bulls or rams intended for breeding purposes.
  • Milk Withdrawal: Not for use in lactating animals producing milk for human consumption.
  • Withdrawal Periods for Meat: Strict withdrawal periods for meat and offal must be observed before treated animals can enter the human food chain. These periods vary depending on the administration route and concentration of the product used (e.g., in cattle: 30-44 days for injection, in pigs: 14 days for medicated feed).

ADMINISTRATION

  • Cattle (Beef and Non-lactating Dairy):
    • Intramuscular (IM): Administer at a dose of 20 mg/kg (approx. 3 mL per 100 lbs) body weight. A second dose must be given 48 hours later.
    • Subcutaneous (SQ): Administer as a single dose of 40 mg/kg (approx. 6 mL per 100 lbs) body weight.
  • Swine:
    • Intramuscular (IM): Administer at a dose of 15 mg/kg (1 mL per 45 lbs) body weight. A second dose is required 48 hours later. Injection should be given only in the neck musculature.
  • Other Species:
    • Sheep: Administered via IM injection at 20 mg/kg, twice, 48 hours apart.
    • Fish: Can be administered via oral medication in feed, immersion, or injection
Guidelines
  • Injection Site: For livestock, injections should only be administered in the neck area to minimize damage to high-value meat cuts.
  • Volume Limit: Do not exceed 10 mL per injection site in cattle to prevent severe local tissue reactions. For swine, the limit is typically 3 mL per site.
  • Needle Use: Use a clean, sterile needle. For SQ, use a shorter needle at a 45° angle; for IM, use a longer needle at a 90° angle.
