Human Chorionic Gonadotropin Injection

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) is used to mimic luteinizing hormone (LH) to induce ovulation, treat ovarian cysts, and stimulate testosterone production in male animals. It is a crucial component in controlled breeding programs, especially for mares.

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) is indicated for the treatment of various reproductive disorders in cattle and horses.

  • Induction of Ovulation: This is a major use, particularly in mares and cows in controlled-breeding and artificial insemination programs, to time breeding accurately and improve conception rates.
  • Treatment of Ovarian Disorders:
    • In cows, it is specifically approved for the treatment of nymphomania (frequent or constant heat behavior) caused by cystic ovaries.
    • It is also used to induce the regression of ovarian cysts in guinea pigs and other small mammals.
  • Stimulation of Gonadal Function (Males):
    • It is used in male animals (dogs, horses, goats) to stimulate testosterone production by Leydig cells, which helps in the diagnosis of cryptorchidism (retained testicles) or to test testicular function.
    • Low-dose injections have also shown promise in improving semen quality in dogs with certain dysfunctions.
  • Pregnancy Support and Synchronization Protocols: It can be part of broader synchronization protocols in cattle to promote the formation of accessory corpora lutea, increase progesterone levels, and potentially enhance pregnancy rates.
  • Other Species:
    • In finfish, it is licensed to assist spawning behavior.
    • It has been used to induce ovulation in ferrets with persistent estrus and to manage certain reproductive issues in avian species (hens).
ADMINISTRATION
The specific dosage and method of administration (intramuscular or intravenous) depend on the species and the condition being treated. A common commercial preparation, such as Chorulon®, is supplied as a freeze-dried powder and diluent that must be reconstituted immediately before use.
  • HCG is a protein, and repeated use in some species (like cattle or cats) can lead to an antibody response, which may reduce effectiveness or cause allergic reactions.
  • No withdrawal period is typically required for cows or finfish treated according to label directions.
  • Treatment should always be performed under the guidance of a qualified veterinarian.
