Magnesium Oxide Feed Mix

Magnesium Oxide is used to prevent magnesium deficiency in livestock, and boost overall metabolic health in cattle, sheep, goats, and horses. It's an essential nutritional supplement for livestock, used as an antacid and mild laxative.

Magnesium Oxide feed mix is indicated for the prevention of magnesium deficiency (hypomagnesemia) in livestock.

INDICATIONS

  • Nutritional Supplementation: Magnesium is a crucial mineral for animals, involved in hundreds of enzymatic reactions, nerve function, and muscle contraction. It is a cost-effective and highly concentrated source of magnesium, commonly added to the daily feed of dairy cows, beef cattle, sheep, goats, horses, pigs, and poultry to prevent deficiencies.
    • Preventing Magnesium Deficiency: Supplementation is vital to prevent conditions like hypomagnesemia or “grass tetany”, which often occurs in spring when fast-growing pasture grass is low in magnesium. Deficiency symptoms can include nervousness, muscle tremors, irritability, and in severe cases, death.
    • Supporting Overall Health and Productivity: Adequate magnesium levels can improve milk production and fat content in dairy cows, enhance growth rates in beef cattle and poultry (increasing body mass in broilers), and support reproductive performance. It also aids bone development and strengthens the immune system.
  • Digestive Aid: Acts as an antacid and a mild laxative, particularly in cattle, sheep, and goats.
    • Antacid: It helps neutralize excess stomach acid and stabilize rumen pH (preventing acidosis), which is beneficial for treating conditions like grain overload or acid indigestion.
    • Laxative: It promotes defecation by drawing water into the intestines, softening stools and helping to clear toxic material from the digestive tract.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Mixed into Feed: Blend the powder into total mixed rations (TMR), grain, or pelleted feeds, ensuring even distribution.
  • Top-Dressing: Sprinkle over hay or feed, sometimes mixed with water to create a paste for better adherence, especially in morning dew.
  • Water Drench: Mix thoroughly with water to form a suspension, but agitate frequently during administration to keep it mixed.
  • Cattle/Sheep (Grass Tetany/Acidosis): Often dusted on pasture in mornings, mixed in feed, or given as boluses.
  • Horses (Ulcers/Supplementation): Mix into daily feed, often starting with small doses and dividing throughout the day, or as custom pellets.
