Monensin (antimicrobial)

Monens Monensin premix is a medicated feed additive indicated for the prevention of coccidiosis in cattle, chickens, turkeys, goats, and sheep.

Beef Cattle: For improved feed efficiency and coccidiosis control in confined cattle, and increased weight gain and coccidiosis prevention/control in pasture cattle.
Dairy Cows: Used in lactating and dry cows to increase milk production efficiency, reduce milk fat, minimize body condition loss, improve milk protein production efficiency, and aid in ketosis control.
Replacement Heifers (Beef and Dairy): For increased weight gain and coccidiosis prevention.
Calves (Excluding Veal): For coccidiosis prevention and control.

for Poultry

Broiler Chickens: Prevention of coccidiosis from E. tenella, E. necatrix, E. acervulina, and others.
Growing Turkeys: Prevention of coccidiosis from E. adenoeides, E. meleagrimitis, and E. gallopavonis.

for Small Ruminants

Goats: For prevention of coccidiosis in confined goats caused by Eimeria crandallis, E. christenseni, and E. ninakohlyakimovae.
Sheep: For prevention and control of coccidiosis.

Mixing: The premix must be thoroughly and evenly mixed into the total daily ration, a supplement, or a component feed to achieve the correct, low concentration in parts per million (ppm) or grams per ton. An intermediate blending step may be required for proper dispersion.
Continuous Feeding: The medicated feed is typically fed continuously as the sole ration for the duration of the approved use period.
Dosage: The dosage is species-specific and must be strictly followed to avoid toxicity. It can be incorporated into the feed to provide a specific concentration (e.g., 100 g per metric tonne of feed for broiler chickens) or a fixed amount per head per day (e.g., 200 mg for pasture cattle).
Methods:
- Complete Feed: Mixed into the entire daily feed.
- Component Feeding/Top Dress: Mixed into a smaller amount of concentrate that is then added on top of the usual forage ration.
- Intraruminal Device: In some regions (like the EU for ketosis prevention), a controlled-release capsule is inserted into the rumen for long-term administration.
