Penethamate hydroiodide is indicated for the treatment of bacterial infections in cattle (especially for mastitis in lactating cows), and also in swine, horses, goats, and sheep.
INDICATIONS
- Bovine Mastitis: The most common indication for its use is the treatment of clinical and subclinical mastitis in lactating dairy cows. It is effective against:
- Streptococcus uberis
- Streptococcus dysgalactiae
- Streptococcus agalactiae
- Staphylococcus aureus (specifically non-beta-lactamase producing strains)
- Other Cattle Infections:
- Metritis: Infections of the uterus.
- Respiratory Infections: Including pneumonia.
- Footrot: Bacterial infection of the feet.
- General Bacterial Infections in Other Species: While primarily used in cattle, it is also indicated for treating general bacterial infections sensitive to penicillin in:
- Swine (Pigs)
- Horses
- Sheep and Goats
ADMINISTRATION
- Reconstitution: The powder in the vial must be mixed with the specified amount of diluent. The vial should be shaken vigorously after adding the diluent to ensure the powder is fully dispersed.
- Injection Site: The injection is typically given in the anterior half of the neck muscle.
- Injection Technique: The injection should be administered as a deep intramuscular shot, using a 90-degree angle to the muscle. The maximum volume per injection site should not exceed a specific amount (e.g., 6 ml for cattle, up to 20 ml depending on the product label), and for multi-day treatments, the side of administration may be alternated.
- Dosage Regimen: Treatment often involves daily injections for several consecutive days (e.g., three days), at doses based on body weight.
