Streptomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic indicated for the treatment of infections in livestock and companion animals.
INDICATIONS
- Leptospirosis: An important zoonotic disease in cattle, pigs, and sheep, where streptomycin helps eliminate the carrier state, reducing transmission risk to humans and other animals.
- Brucellosis and Tularemia: Systemic bacterial infections.
- Respiratory tract infections: Including pneumonia and bronchopneumonia caused by susceptible organisms like Pasteurella spp. and Klebsiella pneumoniae.
- Genitourinary tract infections: Such as endometritis, metritis, pyometra, cystitis, and nephritis.
- Gastrointestinal tract infections: Including bacterial diarrhea and enteritis caused by Salmonella spp. or E. coli.
- Mastitis: Inflammation of the udder, often caused by bacterial infections.
- Septicemia: Generalized bacterial infection of the bloodstream.
- Wound and postnatal sepsis.
- Erysipelas and edema in pigs.
- Actinomycosis and actinobacillosis (“wooden tongue”) in cattle.
- Navel/joint ill in young animals.
- Tuberculosis: In specific cases and often as a second-line or adjunctive treatment. .
ADMINISTRATION
- Route: Administered parenterally, with the intramuscular (IM) route being common for rapid and complete absorption.
- Dosage: Dosage and treatment duration depend on the animal’s species, weight, age, and the severity of the infection, and should not exceed three to five days with combination products.
- Reconstitution (if powder): Dissolve the powder using a sterile diluent such as water for injection or sterile saline. Standard ratios are typically 4 mL of solvent per 1 gram of powder.
- Preparation: Shake the vial well before drawing the dose to ensure a homogenous mixture, especially for suspensions.
- Injection Technique:
- Route: Administer strictly by deep intramuscular injection.
- Site: Use large muscle groups (e.g., neck or gluteal muscles in livestock).
- Rotation: Always rotate injection sites if multiple doses are required.
- Post-Injection: Massage the site gently after administration to aid absorption.
