Toltrazuril Solution

Toltrazuril is an antiprotozoal medication used for the treatment and prevention of coccidiosis - a parasitic disease caused by the Eimeria or Isospora protozoa - in dogs, cats, horses, cattle, pigs, poultry and sheep.

Toltrazuril oral solution is primarily indicated for the prevention and treatment of coccidiosis across a variety of animal species.

INDICATIONS

  • Poultry (Chickens & Turkeys): Treatment and prevention of coccidiosis caused by various Eimeria species (e.g., E. tenella, E. necatrix, E. acervulina). It is typically administered in drinking water to manage outbreaks.
  • Cattle (Calves): Prevention of clinical signs and reduction of oocyst shedding in calves on farms with a confirmed history of coccidiosis due to Eimeria bovis or Eimeria zuernii.
  • Sheep (Lambs): Prevention of clinical signs in lambs exposed to Eimeria crandallis and Eimeria ovinoidalis.
  • Pigs (Neonatal Piglets): Treatment of preclinical coccidiosis caused by Isospora suis to prevent diarrhea and reduce pathogen shedding.
Off-Label & Specialty Uses
  • Dogs & Cats: Used to treat coccidiosis (often Isospora or Cystoisospora spp.), particularly in puppies and kittens. It is also used for the shedding stage of toxoplasmosis in cats.
  • Horses: Sometimes used to treat Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM) caused by Sarcocystis neurona, though approved alternatives like ponazuril are typically preferred.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Direct Oral Dosing: For individual animals like dogs, cats, horses, or calves, the solution is administered directly into the mouth using a dosing syringe.
  • Mixing with Food: For pets, it can be mixed with a small amount of food to improve palatability and reduce the risk of digestive upset.
  • Mass Medication (Drinking Water): In poultry, pigs, and large herds of cattle, the solution is often diluted into the drinking water. This should typically be the animal’s only water source during the treatment period.
Preparation & Administration
  1. Shake Well: Always shake the bottle thoroughly before use to ensure the active ingredient is evenly distributed.
  2. Dosage Accuracy: Dosing is strictly based on body weight (mg/kg). Use a precise measuring device like the Baxa ExactaMed Oral Syringe for smaller animals.
  3. Safety: Wear disposable gloves when handling the medication to avoid direct contact with your skin.
  4. Shelf Life: If mixed with water, the medicated solution should generally be used within 24 hours.
Treatment Duration
  • Dogs & Cats: Once daily for 2–3 days, sometimes repeated in 7–10 days.
  • Livestock/Poultry: Often given for 2 consecutive days, or as a single dose for calves depending on the concentration.
