Ethopabate Powder

Ethopabate powder is an anticoccidial agent (coccidiostat) in poultry, and sometimes other livestock (cattle, sheep, goats), to prevent and treat coccidiosis, a parasitic disease caused by Eimeria species that Interferes with the protozoa's ability to reproduce, eliminating parasites from the animal's intestines.

Ethopabate is indicated as a coccidiostat, to treat and prevent coccidiosis in poultry.

INDICATIONS

  • Poultry Coccidiosis: The main use is in broiler chickens to prevent severe outbreaks and promote weight gain, targeting specific Eimeria types.
  • Broad-Spectrum Control: Often combined with Amprolium (a thiamine blocker) to cover Eimeria species that Ethopabate alone might miss, offering synergistic protection.
  • Livestock: Used in cattle, sheep, and goats for coccidiosis control, though less common than in poultry.
  • Preventative Programs: Used as part of a routine to control coccidiosis in high-risk environments or during expected exposure periods.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Combination Therapy: The combination of ethopabate and amprolium provides a synergistic effect, enhancing efficacy against multiple Eimeria species. Amprolium works by inhibiting thiamine uptake by the parasite, while ethopabate interferes with the parasite’s folic acid synthesis pathway.
  • Administration Method: The powder is typically incorporated into poultry feed at specific concentrations (e.g., 2 to 16 parts per million) or dissolved in the drinking water. It is available as a premix for uniform incorporation.
  • Prevention and Treatment: It is used both for the prevention (prophylaxis) of coccidiosis in broiler and replacement chickens and for treating active infections.
  • Target Species: Its use is specifically targeted at poultry.
  • Dosage and Duration: Dosage and administration schedules must strictly follow manufacturer guidelines and veterinary recommendations to avoid toxicity or the development of resistance. Treatment typically involves administration for 5 to 7 days, sometimes followed by a lower maintenance dose for a longer period.
