Livealth Fosfoalcin (fosfomycin) is an antibiotic used for the treatment of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial infections.
INDICATIONS
Chickens and Pigs
- E. coli and Salmonella spp. infections in broiler chickens.
- A wide variety of bacterial infections in piglets, including those caused by Pasteurella sp., Staphylococcus sp., Streptococcus sp., Haemophilus sp., and Klebsiella sp..
Off-Label/Alternative Use in Dogs
- Complicated or multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial urinary tract infections (UTIs) / cystitis, particularly those caused by E. coli or Enterococcus faecalis that are resistant to first-line antibiotics.
ADMINISTRATION
- Intravenous (IV) Administration: In cattle and dogs, IV administration is a studied method. In humans, IV fosfomycin must be diluted and administered as an infusion over a period of time (e.g., 15 to 60 minutes or longer, depending on the dose and patient risk factors) to prevent adverse effects from rapid injection.
- Intramuscular (IM) Administration: Fosfomycin has been shown to have good bioavailability after IM injection in cattle and dogs. The injection is given deep into a large muscle mass, such as the muscles along the spine (axials) or the large muscle on the back of the hind leg (codal thigh muscle).
- Subcutaneous (SC) Administration: This method involves injecting the medication into the fat layer between the skin and muscle. Common sites include the area around the shoulder blades, where there is ample loose skin.
