Equip Artervac Vaccine

Zoetis Equip Artervac vaccine is used to immunize horses against equine viral arteritis (EVA), a disease that can cause respiratory issues, vasculitis, and abortion. Works by reducing the clinical signs of the disease, and shedding of the virus in nasal secretions after infection. A WVA Veterinary Medicine.

Equine Viral Arteritis (EVA) vaccine is indicated to protect stallions from becoming carriers, prevent abortions in mares, and control outbreaks.

INDICATIONS

  • Protecting Stallions: A main indication is to protect stallions against infection and prevent them from becoming long-term carriers and shedders of the virus in their semen, which can spread the disease during breeding. Stallions should be vaccinated at least three weeks prior to breeding. Vaccination does not, however, stop viral shedding in stallions who are already persistently infected.
  • Immunizing Mares: Seronegative (EVA-negative) mares are vaccinated before being bred with semen that might be EAV-infective or with vaccinated, seropositive stallions. Maiden and barren (open) mares may be vaccinated anytime but must be vaccinated at least three weeks before breeding. Safety has not been established in pregnant mares, and their vaccination should be approached with caution due to potential fetal infection risk.
  • Controlling Outbreaks: It can be used to help curtail outbreaks in non-breeding horse populations.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Route: The vaccine is administered as a 1-mL dose via intramuscular injection.
  • Primary Course: Horses from nine months of age or older should receive two primary doses with an interval of 3 to 6 weeks.
  • Booster Vaccinations: Boosters are recommended every six months to maintain immunity.
  • Function: Reduces the severity of clinical signs and decreases the amount of virus shed in nasal secretions following infection.
  • Effect: Induces active immunity against the virus.
  • Note: Horse must be isolated for 21 days post vaccination from sero-negative or unknown status horses, especially pregnant mares.
