S. aureus mastitis vaccine is indicated to reduce the risk, severity, and duration of mastitis in dairy animals by stimulating immunity against S. aureus.
INDICATIONS
- Prevent New Infections: Reduces the likelihood of heifers and cows developing S. aureus mastitis.
- Reduce Severity: Decreases the intensity of clinical signs (swelling, clots) and systemic involvement (fever).
- Shorten Duration: Lowers the time infected animals have the disease and the level of bacterial shedding.
- Improve Milk Quality: Leads to lower SCC and better milk composition.
- Manage Chronic Cases: Can help resolve long-standing infections, especially when combined with other strategies.
ADMINISTRATION
Typically given as parenteral injections, most commonly subcutaneous or intramuscular, in the neck, requiring initial doses followed by boosters.
- Timing (Cows): Often given as a primary series before calving (e.g., 8 and 4 weeks prepartum) and sometimes boosters post-calving or every few months.
- Timing (Goats): Some protocols (like VIMCO®) use two doses annually, 5 weeks before kidding, with a booster 3 weeks after the first dose.
- Dose & Frequency: Varies; some require two doses (e.g., 4 weeks apart) for heifers, others might be every 90 days for ongoing protection in cows.
