Spectam concentrate (Spectinomycin) is a broad-spectrum aminocyclitol antibiotic used in poultry and pigs to control bacterial infections.
INDICATIONS
- In Chickens, Turkeys, Ducks
- Chronic Respiratory Disease (CRD): Used as an aid in the prevention or control of losses due to CRD associated with susceptible Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) and Mycoplasma synoviae (MS).
- Colibacillosis: Indicated for controlling mortality and lessening the severity of infections caused by Escherichia coli.
- Salmonellosis: Used in controlling mortality and severity of infections caused by Salmonella typhimurium in newly hatched chicks.
- Other infections: Can also be used to address fowl cholera and infectious synovitis.
- Growth promotion: Indicated for increasing weight gain and improving feed efficiency in floor-raised broilers.
In Pigs/Piglets
- Bacterial Enteritis (Scours): Indicated for the treatment and control of enteric colibacillosis (white scours) in pigs under four weeks of age, caused by Escherichia coli susceptible to spectinomycin.
In Calves
- Enteric and Respiratory Infections: Used for the treatment of enteric infections and respiratory disease caused by organisms sensitive to spectinomycin, such as E. coli, Pasteurella spp., and Mycoplasma spp..
ADMINISTRATION
- Oral Administration is Key: The product is designed for oral intake because spectinomycin is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, concentrating its effect in the enteric system to treat bacterial enteritis (e.g., E. coli).
- Sole Source of Water: Medicated water should be the only source of drinking water available to the animals during the treatment period to ensure they consume the full, correct dose.
- Preparation: The solution must be prepared daily with fresh water just before use. Any unconsumed medicated water should be discarded after 24 hours.
- Mixing Methods:
- Directly in Header Tank: The product can be mixed directly into the water header tanks.
- Proportioner System: It can also be introduced via a water proportioner pump, after dissolving the required amount in a stock solution first.
- Dosage Calculation: The exact daily concentration needs to be calculated based on the animals’ body weight and their estimated daily water consumption to ensure accurate dosing and prevent underdosing.
