Clostridium novyi vaccine is indicated for the prevention of infectious necrotic hepatitis (black disease) in healthy cattle and sheep.
INDICATIONS
- Clostridium novyi (Black Disease): The primary target, preventing sudden death due to liver necrosis, often triggered by liver fluke migration in sheep and cattle.
- Multi-Clostridial Protection: C. novyi vaccines are usually combined with vaccines for other clostridial diseases like Blackleg (C. chauvoei), Malignant Edema (C. septicum), and Enterotoxemia (C. perfringens Types B, C, D).
- Healthy Animals: Used to protect healthy cattle, sheep, and sometimes swine from these specific clostridial infections.
ADMINISTRATION
- Route: Most commonly Subcutaneous (SQ), just under the skin, often in the neck to avoid valuable muscle tissue.
- Technique: Use aseptic (sterile) practices; some prefer creating a skin “pocket” for the injection.
- Dosage: Varies by product, but common examples are 2 mL (cattle) or 1-2.5 mL (sheep).
- Initial Series: A primary series of two injections is standard, given 3-4 weeks apart, starting around 3 months of age.
- Boosters: Annual revaccination is common, with frequency depending on risk.
- Precautions: Shake well, don’t mix with other products, and follow label warnings (e.g., withdrawal times before slaughter).
- Site Selection: Injecting Clostridial vaccines into the hindquarters can cause significant muscle damage, reducing beef quality; the neck is preferred.
