Piperazine Tablets

Piperazine tablets are an oral medication used to treat common roundworm and pinworm infections in dogs, cats, poultry, horses, and ruminants. The tablets work by causing flaccid paralysis of the worms, which allows them to be expelled naturally from the animal's body via normal intestinal movements.

Piperazine tablets indicated as an anthelmintic for the treatment and control of internal parasitic infections in domestic animals.

INDICATIONS

  • Dogs and Cats: It is most frequently indicated for the removal of large roundworms (Ascarids), specifically Toxocara canis, Toxocara cati, and Toxascaris leonina. Some formulations also list hookworms as a secondary indication.
  • Horses: Used for infections caused by Parascaris equorum (roundworms), Oxyuris equi (pinworms), and certain small strongyles (Trichonema).
  • Swine (Pigs): Indicated for the control of Ascaris suum (large roundworms) and Oesophagostomum spp. (nodular worms).
  • Poultry: Used to treat infections of Ascaridia galli (large roundworms), and Capillaria spp. (threadworms) in chickens and turkeys.
  • Ruminants (Cattle, Sheep, Goats): Indicated for Ascaris species and occasionally other nematodes like Nematodirus or Cooperia.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Route: The tablets are administered orally. They can be given whole or crushed and mixed with a small amount of food or water.
  • Fasting: Unlike some older dewormers, preliminary fasting or subsequent purging is generally not necessary when using piperazine.
  • Dosage: The dosage is calculated based on the animal’s body weight and the specific species being treated. It is crucial to weigh the animal accurately to ensure correct dosing.
  • Treatment Schedule: A single dose is often sufficient, but a follow-up dose after a specific period (e.g., 2-3 weeks) is usually recommended to treat any newly matured worms that were in the larval stage during the first treatment.
  • Simultaneous Treatment: It is advisable to treat all susceptible animals in a group (e.g., a mother dog/cat and her litter) at the same time to prevent reinfestation.
