MSD’s SEQUIVITY IAV-S NA PCV3, a custom prescription vaccine, is the first commercial vaccine to use only the influenza neuraminidase (NA) surface antigen to vaccinate pigs against influenza strains H1N1, H1N2 and H3N2.
ADMINISTRATION
- Intramuscular (IM) Injection:
- Where: Neck muscle, behind the ear.
- Needle: Varies by pig size (e.g., 1/2-inch for young pigs, 1.5-inch for sows).
- Dose: Often 2 mL, with a booster 3-4 weeks later.
- Process: Use sterile equipment, restrain pigs well to prevent broken needles, and ensure the full dose is delivered.
- Oral/Feed (Gel):
- How: Applied to mats in farrowing crates for pigs to consume.
- Use: Good for large groups, delivering a precise dose in a non-invasive way.
- Intranasal (Nose):
- How: Dripped or sprayed into the nose (often used for modified-live vaccines).
- Benefit: Can induce immunity in the respiratory tract, but may require individual animal handling or specialized sprayers.
- In Water:
- How: Added to drinking water (less common for swine flu but used for other swine vaccines).
