PolyMast Intramammary Infusion

Boehringer's PolyMast is an intramammary infusion product used to treat mastitis in lactating dairy cattle. It is an antibiotic that provides bactericidal activity against common mastitis-causing bacteria, and is administered once daily for a maximum of three treatments. A WOAH Veterinary Medicine.

Hetacillin intramammary infusion is indicated for the treatment of acute, chronic, or subclinical bovine mastitis in lactating cows.

INDICATIONS

  • Acute, chronic, or subclinical mastitis in lactating dairy cows.
  • Bacteria it targets: It is effective against major mastitis-causing pathogens like Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus dysgalactiae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli.
  • Treatment plan: It is typically administered once every 24 hours for up to three consecutive days.
  • Milk and meat withdrawal: There are specific withdrawal periods for milk and meat after the last treatment, which are 72 hours for milk and 10 days for meat.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Route: The product comes in a 10 mL syringe that is inserted into the teat canal of the infected quarter to deliver the medication
  • Prepare the Udder: Milk out infected quarter completely. Wash udder and teats with warm water and antiseptic, then dry thoroughly.
  • Disinfect the Teat: Use an alcohol swab (provided) to clean and disinfect the teat end and orifice.
  • Infuse the Medication:
    • Remove the protective cap (Opti-Sert) from the syringe.
    • Insert the syringe tip only 2-3 millimeters into the teat canal (partial insertion) to avoid contamination and sphincter dilation.
    • Gently and continuously express the entire contents of the syringe into the quarter.
  • Massage: Withdraw the syringe and gently massage the teat and udder to help distribute the medication up into the milk cistern.
  • Post-Treatment: Dip teats in a germicidal teat dip to prevent new infections. 

DOSING

  • Dose: One 10 mL syringe per infected quarter.
  • Frequency: Once daily.
  • Duration: For a maximum of 3 treatments, 24 hours apart.
