Mecillinam uterine bolus is an intrauterine antibiotic indicated for the prophylactic and therapeutic treatment of endometritis in cows.
INDICATIONS
- Prophylactic treatment of uterine infections after parturition (calving) to prevent infection of the uterus.
- Therapeutic treatment of specific uterine infections:
- Subacute endometritis
- Chronic endometritis
ADMINISTRATION
- Intrauterine use: The bolus are inserted directly into the uterus. Strict hygiene must be observed, with the operator’s hands and arms and the animal’s external genitalia thoroughly cleansed before insertion to prevent further infection.
- Intrauterine flush: Alternatively, the bolus can be dissolved in warm water to create a flush solution that is then used to irrigate the uterus.
- Topical application: For infected wounds outside the uterus (but not deep or puncture wounds or serious burns), the bolus can be dissolved in warm water and the solution thoroughly flushed into the wound.
- Dosage: The typical dosage for cattle is 2 to 4 bolus, and for sheep, it is 1/2 to 1 bolus. Treatment may be repeated in 24 to 48 hours if necessary.
