Rifaximin Oral Suspension is indicated for the treatment of chronic enteropathy, primarily in dogs and horses.

INDICATIONS

  • Chronic Enteropathy (CE) in Dogs: Rifaximin is considered a useful alternative to metronidazole for managing CE, particularly due to its targeted, non-systemic action within the gastrointestinal tract and lack of systemic side effects.
  • Gastrointestinal Bacterial Infections: As a broad-spectrum, non-systemic antibiotic, it is suitable for treating various acute and chronic bacterial infections in the gut.
  • Dermatological Diseases: It can be used in various animal species for the local treatment of skin infections.
  • Mastitis in Cows: It is approved as an intra-mammary infusion (injection into the udder) for the therapy and prophylaxis of mastitis.
  • Endometritis in Cattle and Horses: It is administered intrauterine (into the uterus) for the treatment of female reproductive system disorders.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Shake Well: Always shake the suspension bottle vigorously before drawing a dose to ensure the medication is evenly mixed.
  • Measure Accurately: Use an oral syringe to measure the dose exactly.
  • Administer Orally:
    • Position the pet in a comfortable, restrained position (e.g., sitting).
    • Place one hand over their mouth to gently steady their head.
    • Insert the tip of the syringe into the cheek pocket or the side of the mouth, not directly down the throat, to prevent choking.
    • Slowly depress the plunger to give the medication, allowing the pet time to swallow.
  • Follow with Reward: Offer a treat or praise immediately after administration to create a positive association with the process.
  • Dosing Schedule: Administer the medication, typically every 12 hours for a set number of days, depending on the animal’s condition.
