Primor (ormetoprim) is an antimicrobial agent used to treat bacterial infections in dogs, primarily skin, soft tissue, and UTIs.
INDICATIONS
- Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Abscesses and wounds, particularly those involving staphylococcal bacteria.
- Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Infections in dogs caused by susceptible strains of E. coli, Staphylococcus spp., and Proteus mirabilis.
- Broad-Spectrum Antibacterial: The combination of sulfadimethoxine and ormetoprim (a 5:1 ratio) provides enhanced efficacy against bacterial pathogens compared to sulfonamides alone.
ADMINISTRATION
- Dosing Schedule: It is typically given once daily. Veterinary protocols often start with a higher “loading dose” on the first day, followed by a lower maintenance dose for the remainder of the treatment (usually 14 to 21 days).
- With or Without Food: You can give Primor with or without food. If your pet vomits after taking it on an empty stomach, try giving the next dose with a small meal or treat to ease gastrointestinal upset.
- Hydration: Ensure your pet has constant access to plenty of fresh water, as sulfonamides like Primor can potentially cause crystal formation in the urine if the animal is dehydrated.
- Completion: Always finish the entire course prescribed by your veterinarian, even if symptoms seem to have cleared up.
