Levofloxacin is a third-generation fluoroquinolone used in small animals, and sometimes farm animals, to treat severe bacterial infections.

INDICATIONS

  • Respiratory Infections: Pneumonia and upper respiratory tract infections.
  • Urinary Tract Infections (UTI): Especially complicated or deep-seated infections.
  • Soft Tissue & Skin Infections: Including pyoderma, abscesses, and wound infections.
  • Reproductive & Prostate Infections: Bacterial prostatitis and mammary gland infections.
  • Systemic Infections: Septicemia and osteomyelitis.
  • Gastrointestinal Infections: Intestinal infections due to sensitive organisms.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Method: Slow intravenous (IV) injection is a primary recommended route.
  • Dilution: The medication is often diluted to a lower concentration, such as 5 mg/mL, using compatible fluids before being administered.
  • Precautions: Avoid rapid or bolus IV administration, as this can cause adverse reactions. It should not be mixed with other medications to prevent compatibility issues.
  • Frequency: Administration is generally done once every 24 hours.
