Levofloxacin is a third-generation fluoroquinolone used in small animals, and sometimes farm animals, to treat severe bacterial infections.
INDICATIONS
- Respiratory Infections: Pneumonia and upper respiratory tract infections.
- Urinary Tract Infections (UTI): Especially complicated or deep-seated infections.
- Soft Tissue & Skin Infections: Including pyoderma, abscesses, and wound infections.
- Reproductive & Prostate Infections: Bacterial prostatitis and mammary gland infections.
- Systemic Infections: Septicemia and osteomyelitis.
- Gastrointestinal Infections: Intestinal infections due to sensitive organisms.
ADMINISTRATION
- Method: Slow intravenous (IV) injection is a primary recommended route.
- Dilution: The medication is often diluted to a lower concentration, such as 5 mg/mL, using compatible fluids before being administered.
- Precautions: Avoid rapid or bolus IV administration, as this can cause adverse reactions. It should not be mixed with other medications to prevent compatibility issues.
- Frequency: Administration is generally done once every 24 hours.
