Amoxicillin capsules are indicated for a variety of bacterial infections in dogs and cats, provided the infection is caused by organisms susceptible to amoxicillin.
INDICATIONS
- Skin and soft tissue infections: Bacterial dermatitis, abscesses, lacerations, and infected wounds.
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs): Bacterial cystitis and other genitourinary tract infections.
- Respiratory tract infections: Upper respiratory infections, tonsillitis, and tracheobronchitis.
- Gastrointestinal infections: Bacterial gastroenteritis.
- Dental infections: Dental and gum infections in dogs and cats.
- Ear infections: Bacterial ear infections.
ADMINISTRATION
Amoxicillin capsules are given by mouth. The specific dosage and duration of treatment will depend on the animal’s weight, the type of infection, and how severe it is.
- With or without food: Capsules can be given with or without food. However, giving them with a meal can help prevent common side effects like nausea, vomiting, or lack of appetite.
- Follow directions: It is crucial to follow the veterinarian’s instructions precisely and complete the entire course of medication, even if the animal appears to feel better sooner. This helps prevent the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
- Missed dose: If a dose is missed, it should be given when remembered, unless it is close to the next scheduled dose, in which case the missed dose should be skipped.
- Do not use in certain small animals: Amoxicillin should not be given to rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, hamsters, or other rodents, as it can cause life-threatening diarrhea in these species.
