Ampicillin Injection

Ampicillin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections in dogs, cats, horses, and cattle. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. A WOAH, CODEX and WVA Veterinary Medicine.

Ampicillin is a broad-spectrum prescription penicillin antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections in dogs, cats, cattle, and calves.

INDICATIONS

  • In dogs and cats, Ampicillin injection is used to treat bacterial infections in the respiratory tract (such as tonsillitis and bronchopneumonia), urinary tract, gastrointestinal tract, and skin and soft tissues. It may also be used for systemic infections like sepsis and meningitis. 
  • In cattle and calves, ampicillin injection is indicated for bacterial pneumonia, including “shipping fever” and calf pneumonia. Also used “off-label” for other infections like mastitis or foot infections. 
  • In horses, ampicillin injection treats respiratory tract infections, such as pneumonia and strangles, and skin and soft tissue infections like abscesses and wounds. 

ADMINISTRATION

  • Dogs and Cats: Typically given at a dose of 3 mg/lb twice daily.
    • Subcutaneous (SQ): Usually injected into the loose skin around the shoulders or neck.
    • Intramuscular (IM): Injected into large muscle masses such as the neck or thigh.
  • Cattle and Calves: Administered strictly via intramuscular (IM) injection, often in the neck. The standard dose is 2–5 mg/lb once daily.
  • Horses: Administered either IV or IM at approximately 3 mg/lb twice daily.
