Benethamine Penicillin is indicated for treating bacterial infections in cattle, sheep, goats, swine, horses, dogs, and cats.
INDICATIONS
- Subclinical mastitis: It is used to treat udder infections that are not yet showing obvious symptoms during the dry period.
- New infections: It helps protect against new bacterial infections in the udder during the dry period.
- Infection Types: It is indicated for infections caused by penicillin-sensitive bacteria, including Streptococcus and Staphylococcus species (non-penicillinase producing), Clostridium spp., and Pasteurella spp.. Specific conditions treated include:
- Respiratory infections (pneumonia, bronchitis)
- Skin and wound infections
- Foot rot and navel infections
- Mastitis and metritis
ADMINISTRATION
- Route: Administered via deep intramuscular (IM) injection to ensure slow absorption and a “depot effect”. It should never be administered intravenously due to potential serious side effects.
- Common Use: It is often formulated in combination with procaine penicillin G to provide both a rapid initial effect (from the procaine component) and prolonged activity (from the benethamine component).
- Species: Formulations are available for use in cattle, sheep, swine, horses, dogs, and cats.
