Ajinomoto Co. Bicozamycin is an antibiotic used for the prevention and treatment of enteric (intestinal) infections in livestock.

INDICATIONS

  • Bacterial Enteritis (Diarrhoea): It is specifically indicated for treating bacterial diarrhoea in calves and pigs.
  • E. coli Infections: It is highly effective for the eradication of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) in calves, even in asymptomatic carriers.
  • Salmonella Control: It has been used to manage gastrointestinal infections caused by Salmonella species.
  • Growth Promotion: In certain regions, it is used as a feed additive to improve growth rates and feed efficiency in pigs and chickens (including broilers).

ADMINISTRATION

  • Oral Administration: It is commonly given orally as a treatment for bacterial diarrhea in pigs and calves.
  • Feed Additive: Bicozamycin is designated as a feed additive in Japan, allowing it to be mixed directly into animal feed (powder, solid, or pelletized form).
  • Drinking Water: It can be administered through drinking water as a therapeutic treatment.
  • Stomach Tube: In experimental or controlled clinical settings, it has been administered to pigs via stomach tube.
  • Typically administered: Based on the severity of the infection.
  • Treatment Course: Generally given for a consecutive number of days as part of a therapeutic regimen.
