Glucose Powder

Glucose Powder (dextrose) is used to provide a rapid energy boost to animals with hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), stress, illness, and dehydration. It is a highly soluble form of glucose that can applied to the gums to quickly supply the metabolic fuel needed for the body's functions.

Glucose powder is an energy supplement used to treat low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), and to support sick or recovering animals.

INDICATIONS

  • Hypoglycemia (Low Blood Sugar): This is the main indication, often seen in neonatal animals with insufficient maternal milk, animals with certain toxicities (e.g., xylitol), or diabetic pets who have received an overdose of insulin or not eaten enough after their injection.
  • Energy Supplementation: It is used to provide quick energy to sick, weak, or recovering animals, helping to rebuild stamina and vigor.
  • Stress Reduction: In livestock and poultry (chicks, fish, prawns), glucose powder helps reduce stress, such as during brooding, transport, or vaccination periods.
  • Dehydration and Fluid Loss: It can be used as a rehydrating supplement during and after bouts of diarrhea and vomiting in pets.
  • Lack of Appetite: For animals that are tired or have poor appetite due to various diseases.
  • Calving/Lambing/Farrowing: Providing supplemental energy to livestock during demanding periods like birthing.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Oral Solution: The most common method involves dissolving the powder in clean drinking water according to product-specific instructions (e.g., mixing 15-30 grams in 250ml water) and letting the animal drink it, or using a syringe to feed it slowly into the cheek pouch.
  • Gums Application: If a pet is unconscious or unable to swallow, glucose gel, honey, or a concentrated glucose solution can be rubbed onto their gums, where it is quickly absorbed.
  • Intravenous (IV) Infusion: In a veterinary clinic setting, a sterile glucose solution might be administered intravenously by a veterinarian for severe dehydration, parenteral nutrition, or persistent hypoglycemia.
