Kanamycin is indicated for the treatment of serious bacterial infections in cattle, horses, sheep, pigs, dogs, and cats.
INDICATIONS
- Respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia and bronchopneumonia.
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs), including cystitis and nephritis.
- Systemic infections like septicemia (blood poisoning) and bacterial endocarditis.
- Reproductive system infections, such as mastitis (udder infection) and endometritis (uterine infection).
- Gastrointestinal infections (though oral forms are often preferred for local GI treatment, injection can be used for systemic complications like salmonellosis).
- Skin and soft tissue infections, including abscesses, dermatitis, infected wounds, and post-surgical complications.
- Meningitis (infection of the central nervous system lining).
ADMINISTRATION
- Administration Routes: Kanamycin is administered via injection to achieve systemic absorption, as it is poorly absorbed orally for systemic infections. The specific route (intramuscular (IM), subcutaneous (SC), or slow intravenous (IV)) is determined based on animal species, and severity of the infection.
- Targeted Conditions: Used to treat various serious bacterial infections, including:
- Respiratory tract infections (e.g., pneumonia, swine enzootic pneumonia)
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs) and nephritis
- Gastrointestinal infections (e.g., salmonellosis, piglet white diarrhea)
- Sepsis and septicemia
- Reproductive system infections (e.g., mastitis, endometritis, metritis)
- Skin and soft tissue infections, including wound infections and abscesses
- Treatment Duration: It is typically used for short-term treatment, usually for a course of 3 to 5 days, up to a maximum of 7 to 10 days. The full course of treatment must be completed to prevent the development of antibiotic resistance.
- Dosage: The dosage and frequency depend on the animal’s weight, species, and condition. It is often dosed once daily for safety considerations to minimize toxicity.
- Prophylactic Use: Kanamycin may also be used prophylactically (preventively) during transport, surgery, or in crowded farm conditions to reduce the risk of secondary bacterial infections.
