Lincomycin is a lincosamide antibiotic indicated for treating specific bacterial infections in swine, dogs, and cats.
INDICATIONS
Swine (Pigs)
- Infectious arthritis caused by susceptible organisms, including Staphylococci, Streptococci, Erysipelothrix, and Mycoplasma spp..
- Mycoplasma pneumonia.
Dogs and Cats
- Bacterial skin infections (dermatitis, pyoderma).
- Soft tissue infections.
- Deep skin infections.
- Infected wounds and abscesses (more commonly clindamycin, a related drug, is used for these).
ADMINISTRATION
- Intramuscular (IM) Injection: This is a common method for both small and large animals.
- Dogs and Cats: It is typically administered once or twice daily.
- Swine: It is administered into the muscle tissue, usually at a dose of 5 mg per pound of body weight once daily for three to seven days for conditions like arthritis or mycoplasma pneumonia. When large volumes are needed in pigs, a maximum of 10 mL should be administered per injection site.
- Intravenous (IV) Infusion: For dogs and cats, it may be given intravenously. The medication must be diluted with 5% glucose in water or normal saline and administered as a slow drip infusion, not as a rapid injection, to avoid severe cardiopulmonary reactions.
