Nitrofurazone Ointment

J. Chemie Lab Nitrofurazone (nitrofural) is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial  indicated for the topical treatment and prevention of surface bacterial infections in horses, dogs and cats.

INDICATIONS

  • Surface Bacterial Infections: Treats infections of skin wounds, lacerations, and abrasions.
  • Burns: Used in the management of second and third-degree burns to prevent secondary infection.
  • Cutaneous Ulcers: Applied to chronic skin ulcers to control surface infections and encourage healing.
  • Equine “Sweat” Wraps: Used in horses on lower legs with bandages to reduce local edema and inflammation.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Preparation: Clean the lesion and surrounding area with soap and water, then dry thoroughly before application.
  • Application: Using a spatula or sterile glove, apply the ointment directly to the lesion. Alternatively, spread the ointment on a sterile gauze pad and place it over the affected area.
  • Dressing: The ointment is often used with a bandage or, in some cases, can be left exposed.
  • Frequency: Reapply once daily or every few days, depending on the severity of the wound and the doctor’s instructions.
  • Duration: The area should remain in contact with the ointment for at least 24 hours.
