Doxycycline tablets are indicated for a wide variety of bacterial and certain parasitic infections in dogs and cats.
INDICATIONS
- Tick-borne diseases: This is a very common use and includes infections such as Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi), Ehrlichiosis, Anaplasmosis, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever (Rickettsia).
- Respiratory tract infections: Doxycycline treats conditions like pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis, and “kennel cough” (caused by Bordetella bronchiseptica or Mycoplasma species).
- Heartworm disease: It is used as an essential part of the adult heartworm treatment protocol. Doxycycline targets and kills Wolbachia, a type of bacteria that lives inside heartworms, which helps reduce inflammation and complications from treatment.
- Dental and skin infections: It is used for gingivitis, periodontal disease (sometimes as an FDA-approved gel called Doxirobe Gel), skin abscesses, and cellulitis caused by susceptible bacteria.
- Urinary tract infections.
- Feline infectious anemia (Mycoplasma haemofelis).
- Leptospirosis.
- Gastrointestinal infections caused by certain bacteria like E. coli and Salmonella species.
ADMINISTRATION
Treatment can range from a few days to several months, depending on the infection.
- Give with food and water: Tablets must be given with a small amount of food or followed immediately by at least 6 mL of water to prevent the pill from getting stuck in the throat or esophagus, which can cause severe irritation or ulcers, especially in cats.
- Do not give dry: Never administer the tablets dry.
- Avoid dairy and supplements: Do not give multivitamins, calcium or iron supplements, or antacids within two hours before or after giving doxycycline, as these products can reduce the medication’s effectiveness.
- Complete the full course: It is vital to finish the entire course of treatment, even if your pet seems better, to prevent antibiotic resistance and recurrence of the infection.
- Storage: Store the tablets in their original container at room temperature, away from light and moisture.
