Azaperone Injection

Azaperone is a potent neuroleptic tranquilizer and sedative primarily used in pigs. Its main use is to reduce stress and aggression, particularly during management procedures. Produces dose-related sedation by blocking dopamine receptors in the brain. An FAO/WHO Veterinary Medicine.

Azaperone injection is a potent neuroleptic sedative indicated for use in pigs.

INDICATIONS

  • Controlling Aggression: It is widely used to prevent fighting when mixing or regrouping pigs from different litters or pens, helping to establish social order with minimal fighting.
  • Stress Prevention: It is administered to reduce stress and anxiety in pigs, such as before and during transport.
  • Obstetric Conditions: It can be used as an aid in farrowing (birthing) or for sows that may devour their piglets.
  • Pre-anesthetic: It is often used as a pre-medication agent before administering general or local anesthesia to calm the animal and facilitate the use of lower doses of other drugs.
  • Minor Procedures and Restraint: It helps in the chemical restraint of uncooperative pigs for minor clinical procedures, such as physical exams or catheter placement.

ADMINISTRATION

Azaperone is typically administered by a deep intramuscular injection, often in the muscle behind the ear or in the rump. The animal remains conscious but is quiet and less responsive to its environment. The onset of action is rapid, generally within 5–10 minutes, with peak effects within 15-30 minutes.
