Mepyramine is used to counteract the effects of excessive histamine release in various animal species, including cattle, horses, sheep, dogs, and cats.
INDICATIONS
- Allergic skin conditions: Urticaria (hives), eczema, dermatitis (including allergic and recurrent dermatitis), pruritus (itching), and skin edema.
- Anaphylactic and hypersensitivity reactions: Anaphylactic shock, serum sickness, drug allergies, and reactions to insect bites or stings.
- Respiratory and related issues: Allergic rhinitis (hay fever), coughing due to respiratory congestion, pulmonary edema in cattle, and pulmonary emphysema in horses.
- Toxemias and systemic conditions: Post-partum toxemia, puerperal toxemia and secondary retention, mastitis, and certain types of food poisoning.
- Inflammatory conditions: Acute laminitis, inflammation of the hooves in cattle, stomatitis, and certain eye inflammations like uveitis.
ADMINISTRATION
- Intramuscular (IM) injection: The medication is injected directly into a large muscle. This is a common method for mepyramine administration in many species, including horses and dogs.
- Intravenous (IV) injection: The medication is injected directly into a vein. When administered intravenously, the injection should be given slowly. The onset of action is generally quickest with IV administration.
- Subcutaneous (SC) injection: The injection is placed just under the skin. This route is a specified option for small animals like dogs and cats with some products.
