Sulfamonomethoxine + Trimethoprim Injection

Sulfamonomethoxine + Trimethoprim Injection is a broad-spectrum antibiotic combination used to treat bacterial and protozoal infections in livestock and companion animals, including respiratory, urinary tract, and gastrointestinal.

Sulfamonomethoxine + Trimethoprim is indicated for treating bacterial and protozoal infections in livestock and companion animals.

INDICATIONS

  • Cattle: For shipping fever complex, bacterial pneumonia, necrotic pododermatitis (foot rot), calf diphtheria, acute metritis and mastitis.
  • Swine (Pigs): For porcine colibacillosis (bacterial scours) and bacterial pneumonia.
  • Dogs and Cats: Extra-label for systemic infections, bladder and prostate infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and pneumonia.
  • Horses: For infections caused by susceptible gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
  • Chickens and Turkeys: For control and treatment of bacterial pneumonia.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Intramuscular (IM) Injection: This is the most common route for most livestock and pets.
    • In animals like cattle, pigs, and sheep, the injection is given deep into the muscle.
    • For smaller animals or exotic pets, it may also be given subcutaneously, though IM is preferred for better absorption.
  • Intravenous (IV) Injection: Used primarily for acute or life-threatening infections where a rapid effect is required.
    • It must be administered slowly to avoid adverse reactions.
    • In horses, IV administration requires the fluid to be at approximately 37°C and the animal should not be sedated.

Dosage and Protocol

  • Standard Dosage: The typical dose is 1 ml per 10–15 kg
  • Duration: Treatment usually lasts for 3 to 5 consecutive days.
  • Divided Doses: For certain species or severe cases, the daily dose may be divided into two equal treatments (every 12 hours).
  • Site Alternation: When performing multiple intramuscular injections, it is recommended to alternate the injection sites.
  • Hydration: Always ensure the animal has free access to water to prevent the formation of sulfonamide crystals in the kidneys.
