Sulfadoxine & Trimethoprim Injection

Sulfadoxine & Trimethroprim is a potentiated sulfonamide antibiotic/antimicrobial used to treat bacterial and some parasitic infections in cattle, pigs, horses, dogs, and cats. The combination works synergistically to inhibit the bacteria's synthesis of folic acid, leading to a bactericidal effect. A WOAH Veterinary Medicine.

Sulfadoxine & Trimethoprim is a potentiated sulfonamide used for systemic antibacterial action in livestock and companion animals.

INDICATIONS

  • Respiratory Infections: Bacterial pneumonias, including shipping fever (bovine pneumonic pasteurellosis), bronchitis, and rhinitis.
  • Alimentary (Digestive) Infections: Colibacillosis (E. coli infections), salmonellosis, and post-weaning scours in swine.
  • Urogenital Infections: Cystitis, pyelonephritis, metritis, and Mastitis-Metritis-Agalactia (MMA) syndrome in sows.
  • Soft Tissue & Skin Infections: Foot rot (infectious pododermatitis), wound infections, abscesses, and severe mastitis.
  • Systemic & Other Infections: Septicemia, bacterial arthritis, and certain protozoal diseases like coccidiosis.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Cattle: The preferred route is intramuscular injection into the neck. In severe cases, it may be given by slow intravenous injection.
  • Pigs/Swine: Administration is typically by intramuscular injection. For acute, life-threatening infections, slow intravenous administration is recommended.
  • Horses: The injection is generally given only by slow intravenous injection. Rapid IV injection can cause life-threatening shock reactions. Intramuscular injection is not recommended in some formulations due to poor trimethoprim absorption.
  • Sheep/Goats: The medication is typically given by intramuscular injection, but can also be administered via slow intravenous injection.
  • Dogs/Cats: The drug is administered by slow intravenous injection or, in some exotic pets, by intramuscular or subcutaneous (under the skin) injection.
