Orbifloxacin

Schering-Plough Orbax (orbifloxacin) tablets are a fluoroquinolone antibiotic indicated for the treatment of bacterial infections in dogs and cats caused by susceptible organisms.

INDICATIONS

DOGS

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Specifically for treating cystitis.
Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Including wounds and abscesses.
Target Bacteria: Commonly used against susceptible strains of Staphylococcus pseudintermedius, Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Enterococcus faecalis, and Pseudomonas spp..

CATS

Skin Infections: Treatment of wounds and abscesses caused by susceptible bacteria.
Target Bacteria: Specifically against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pasteurella multocida.

ADMINISTRATION

Method: Administer by mouth, often directly to the pet.
Food and Timing: For optimal absorption, they are often given on an empty stomach, generally 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.
Handling Side Effects: If gastrointestinal upset occurs, the tablets can sometimes be given with a small amount of food.
Food Restrictions: It is recommended not to use dairy products to hide the pill, as calcium can interfere with the absorption of the medication.
Duration: Treatment duration is based on the type of infection.
Weight Assessment: Accurate determination of the animal’s weight is necessary for correct administration.
